Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Lois was born Lois Dee on November 7, 1940 in Bayonne, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1958 and received the habit on June 16, 1959 when she was given the religious name, Sister Ellen Elizabeth. (She began using the name, Sister Lois after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1960 and final vows on August 21, 1963. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Brendan, New Haven, CT, 1961; St. Lawrence, Lindenwold, NJ, 1961-1966; and St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1966-1971. She was principal at St. Mary School in Deal, NJ, 1971-1974 and Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1974-1980. Sister Lois then moved on to secondary education and was guidance counselor at St. Gabriel High School in New Rochelle, NY,1980-1984, and at Blessed Sacrament/St. Gabriel High School in New Rochelle, NY,1984-1987. Sister Lois was part-time vocation director for the Newburgh Congregation, 1985-1987. She served in congregation administration for the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1987-1995. While in that position she was: Secretary General, 1987-1991; and Director of Ministry and Education, 1991-1995. Following a sabbatical, she taught at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, NY, 1996-1999, and was assistant principal there, 1999-2004. Sister served as director of motherhouse services at St. Dominic Convent in Blauvelt, NY, 2004-2006. Sister Lois was principal of San Miguel Academy, Newburgh, NY, 2006-. Sister has served the Congregation as Secretary to the Ministry Trust, Ossining, NY. She also worked at the Mariandale Center. Sister Lois earned her BA in Education from Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, and her MA in Guidance from Jersey City State College.
