This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Leona was born Leona DeBoer on May 4, 1939 in Garfield, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 7, 1957 and received the habit on June 11, 1958 when she was given the religious name, Sister James Elizabeth. (She began using the name, Sister Leona after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1959 and final vows on August 21, 1962. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: nursing at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh NY, 1964-1967; a registered nurse at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY, 1965-1966; and, after completing her studies at New York University, was appointed professor of nursing at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1969-. Sister Leona earned her BSN in Nursing from Catholic University in Washington DC, her MA in Nursing from Columbia University, and her PhD in Nursing from New York University.
