This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Dorothea was born Dorothea Darling on January 5, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1945 and received the habit on June 24, 1946 when she was given the religious name, Sister Aloise. (She began using the name, Sister Dorothea after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 25, 1947 and final vows on August 26, 1950. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1947-1953; Pope Pius XII Regional High School, Passaic, NJ, 1953-1961, as business teacher and guidance counselor; and principal at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Newburgh, NY, 1961-1966. She also served on the Council of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1965-1971. Sister served on the formation team as Director of Junior Professed Religious from 1966-1970. She also served as: registrar at Mount Saint Mary College, 1969-1985; worked in guidance/counseling at Mount Saint Mary Academy, 1971-1972: and was coordinator of campus ministry at Mount Saint Mary College, 1979-1980. Sister began work as a pastoral associate at Epiphany Church in Bricktown, NJ in 1985. Sister Dorothea earned her BS in Business Education from Columbia University in New York City, her MA in Guidance and Counseling from Seton Hall University, and her M.Div. from Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, NJ. She died January 4, 2012.
