Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Margaret Thomasine was born Anne Costello on October 4, 1900 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on December 7, 1930 and received the habit on August 31, 1931 when she was given the religious name, Sister Margaret Thomasine. She pronounced first vows on September 2, 1932 and final vows on August 20, 1938. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Passaic, NJ, 1932-1933; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1933-1938; Elizabeth City, NC, 1938-1940; St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1940-1944, 1963-1969; Laurel Springs, NJ, 1944-1952; St. Mary High School, Paterson, NJ, 1952-1954; Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1954-1960, St. Brendan, New Haven, CT, 1960-1961; Sacred Heart, Newburgh, NY, 1961-1963; and Tom River, NJ, 1969-1983. Sister also taught in the Learning Center, 1984-? Sister Marie Thomasine earned her BS in Education and her MA in History from Villanova University, PA. In August of 1992 Sister moved to the infirmary at Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY. She died on January 17, 1998.
