Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Maureen was born Maureen Controy on August 15, 1937 in Pittsfield, MA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on August 30, 1961 and received the habit on June 19, 1962 when she was given the religious name, Sister Francis de Sales. (She began using the name, Sister Maureen after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 20, 1963 and final vows on December 14, 1968. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1961-1962; St. Augustine, Larchmont, NY, 1963-1966; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1966-1968; St. Anthony, Hawthorne, NJ, 1968-1979; Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1979-1980; Our Lady of Holy Angels, Little Falls, NJ, 1980-1985; and Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1985-1998. Sister served as librarian at St. Paul School, Jersey City, NJ, 1998-2003. In 2003, Sister moved to Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, where she has served as: assistant in the archives of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, volunteered in the Foster Grandparent Program at Bishop Dunn Memorial School, and taught in the religious education program at St. Mary Parish. Sister Maureen earned her BA in Sociology from Albertus Magnus College, New Haven CT; and her MA in Elementary Education from St. Joseph College, CT. Sister Maureen moved to St. Catherine of Siena Convent, Caldwell, NJ. She died October 13, 2018.
