Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Ann was born Mary Ann Cirillo on July 29, 1942 in Ridgewood, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 4, 1962 and received the habit on June 19, 1963 when she was given the religious name, Sister Rose Richard. (She began using the name, Sister Mary Ann after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 22, 1964 and final vows on May 17, 1970. During her years in the congregation she served in the following ministries: engaged in clerical services for the Newburgh Dominicans, 1965-1967; taught at Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1967-1968; Saints John & Paul, Larchmont, NY, 1968-1969; Pope Pius XII Regional High School, Passaic, NJ, 1969-1977. Sister was a pastoral minister at Saint Nicholas Church, Passaic, NJ, 1977-1984 and at Saint Lawrence Church, Chester, NJ, 1984-1989. Following a sabbatical year, she was engaged in pastoral ministry with Las Casas in Canton, Oklahoma from 1990-2004. After completing studies in death and grief and reflexology, she remained in Canton and, in 2006, began offering alternative health services. Sister Mary Ann earned her BA in Elementary Education at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, and her MDV in Pastoral Ministry from Darlington Seminary in New Jersey. She also holds certification in T’ai Chi Chih, Reflexology, Death & Grief, and Infant Massage Therapy.
