Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister John Marie was born Alice Carroll on February 20, 1926 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on February 2, 1949 and received the habit on August 12, 1949 when she was given the religious name, Sister John Marie. She pronounced first vows on August 16, 1950 and final vows on August 21, 1953. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1950-1952; St. Joseph, Bayonne, NJ, 1952-1960, 1966-1973; St. Boniface, Paterson, NJ, 1960-1961; Cathedral Elementary, Raleigh, NC, 1961-1966; and Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1973-1997. Sister John Marie earned a BS in history from Jersey City State College, Jersey City, NJ. She died November 8, 2010.
