Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Nancy was born Nancy Carney on March 31, 1923 in Gloucester, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 7, 1941 and received the habit on June 16, 1942 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Joan. (She began using the name, Sister Nancy after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 1, 1943 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools:... St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1944-1947; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1947-1948; St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1948-1951, 1959-1962; St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1951-1952; St. Thomas, Cornwall, NY, 1952-1954; Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1954-1959; St. Mary High School, Paterson, NJ, 1962-1967; St. Joseph High School, Toms, River, NJ, 1967-1982; and Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1982-1984. Sister also served as a Nurse Aid, Cabrini Nursing Home, Dobbs Ferry, NY, 1986-1987 and then in Pastoral Care, 1987-1998. She served as Assistant Director of Activities, Cambridge House, Ossining, NY, 1998-1999. Sister Nancy earned: A BS in Education, Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania; An MA in the Classics, Villanova, University; Supervision, Schools of Religion, Catholic University, Washington, DC; MS, religious Studies, Fordham University, Bronx, NY; Supervision, Certification Program, K-12, Handicapped Children and Clinical Pastoral Education Program, approved as Chaplain. She died April 27, 2003. See more
