Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Louise was born Louise Cababe on September 12, 1944 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 4, 1962 and received the habit on June 19, 1963 when she was given the religious name, Sister Margaret Henry. (She began using the name, Sister Louise after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 22, 1964 and final vows on May 24, 1970. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Joseph, Bayonne, NJ, 1967-1978; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1968-1969; Nativity, Bronx, NY, 1969-1971; Sacred Heart, Raleigh, NC, 1971-1972; St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1972-1975; Holy Rosary, Hawthorne, NY, 1975-1980; Pope Pius XII Diocesan High School, Passaic, NJ, 1980-1982; Tutor, HEOP, Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1982-1983; and Principal, and St. Mary School, New Monmouth, NJ, 1983-1995. Sister also served as Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Curriculum and Testing for the Newark Archdiocese in NJ. Sister Louise earned: a BA in Elementary Education, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY; MA in elementary Education, Jersey City State College, NJ; and a PhD in Supervision and Administration in Education, Fordham, University. She died August 23, 2007.
