Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marie Gerard was born Kathleen (Catherine) Buckley on July 27, 1912 in Rosendale, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 19544 and received the habit on June 21, 1945 when she received the religious name, Sister Marie Gerard. She pronounced first vows on June 24, 1946 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in a domestic capacity in the following convents: Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1947-1952; Superior of Infirmary, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1968-1972; Holy Rosary, New York City, 1947-1952; St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1952; Fairfield, Ct, 1958-1968; St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1969; and Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh, NY, 1972-1975. Sister was also the coordinator of Pastor Care, Mt. St. Mary Infirmary, 1975-? She died August 27, 2007.
