Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Judy was born Judith Brunell on August 5, 1949 in Plattsburgh, NY. She entered the Fall River Congregation on September 17, 1967 and received the habit on August 20, 1968 when she received the religious name, Sister Karen Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Judith after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on November 14, 1970 and final vows on August 17, 1974. During her years in the congregation she served in the following ministries: St. Peter’s School, Plattsburgh, NY, 1972-1978; and Bishop Connelly High School, Fall River, MA, 1978-1979. Following a year of study at the Institute for Spiritual Leadership in Chicago IL, she was appointed formation director for the Fall River Congregation and also was a spirituality associate at St. Stephen Priory in Dover MA. Sister directed the Catherinian Center in North Dartmouth MA, where her ministry was adult education and spirituality, 1980-1982. She taught in the Parent Teen Program of the New Bedford, MA public schools, 1986-2008. Following a sabbatical, she was elected to a five-year term on the leadership team of the Dominican Sisters of Hope in 2009 and then re-elected in 2014. Sister Judith earned her BA in Math and German from Southeastern Massachusetts and her MA in Religious Studies from Providence College.
