Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ann Mildred was born Mary Ann Lebrun Brown on October 18, 1914 in Plattsburgh, NY. She entered the Fall River Congregation on February 1, 1937 and received the habit on August 19, 1937. She pronounced first vows on August 20, 1938 and final vows on August 20, 1941. During her years in the congregation she served in the following ministries: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1939-1947, in the elementary school, 1953-58 and in the high school, 1966-1971; St. Peter’s Elementary and High School, Plattsburgh, NY, 1947-1953, 1959-1966. She taught religious education in Chateauguay, NY, 1958-1959; Bishop Gerrard High School in Fall River, MA, 1971-1976; and Mt. Assumption High School, Plattsburgh, NY, 1976-1978. Sister worked in pastoral care at Morton Hospital in Taunton MA, 1987-1990. She was a library assistant at Bristol Community College in Fall River MA, 1990-1995. Sister Ann Mildred served in congregation administration and as archivist for the Dominican Sisters of Fall River MA. 1980-1987. In 1996 she moved to Plattsburgh, NY, and in 2003 she moved to the Newburgh Center of Hope. Sister earned both a BA in History and an MA in American Studies from St. Michael College, Winooski, VT. She died November 3, 2012.
