Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Helen Joseph was born Elizabeth Brennan on June 4, 1909 in New York City. She entered the Newburgh Congregation February 2, 1929 and received the habit on August 28, 1929 when she received the religious name, Sister Helen Joseph. She pronounced first vows on August 29, 1932 and final vows on august 20, 1936. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Laurel Springs, NJ, 1931-1933; St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1933-1937, 1955-1960; Dominican Day School, Larchmont, NY, 1937-1941; Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1941-1948; St. Thomas, Cornwall, NY, 1948-1949; Principal, St. Augustine, Larchmont, NY, 1949-1955; Principal, St. Cecilia, Iselin, NJ, 1960-1966; St. Mary, Deal, NJ, 1966-1971; Principal, Holy Rosary, Hawthorne, NY, 1971-1975; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1975-1978; and Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1978-1984. Sister was a part time librarian at Assumption, Emerson, NJ, 1984-1986. Sister Helen Joseph earned a BS in education from Fordham University; MA in education from Seton Hall University. She died October 20, 2000.
