Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Eileen was born Eileen Breen on June 20, 1938 in Elmhurst, NY. She entered the Ossining Congregation on September 7, 1956 and received the habit on May 3, 1957 when she received the religious name, Sister Pius. (She began using the name, Sister Eileen after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on May, 1958 and final vows on May 4, 1964. During her years in the congregation she served in the following Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: Manhattan, 1958-1960; Detroit, MI, 1960-1964; Hampton Bays, NY, 1966-1968; and Bronx, NY, 1968-1982. She served in congregational administration for the Ossining Congregation, 1980-1988; and as congregational treasurer, 1982-1984. She also worked for the Tolentine-Zeiser Community Life Center, Bronx, NY, 1985-1988. Sister was nurse coordinator with Health Care for the Homeless in Washington, DC, 1988-1990; nurse and program specialist with national Children’s Center, Washington, DC, 1990-1991. Sister went to work for DePorres Delta Ministries, Marks, MS, where she was nurse, 1991-1992; and coordinator of ministries, 1992-1993. She was a public health nurse for Coahoma County Health Department in Clarksdale, MS, 1993-1994. Sister Eileen was a family nurse practitioner at Tutwiler Clinic in Tutwiler, Mississippi, 1994- . Sister Eileen holds two Master’s degrees, one in Public Health from Columbia University School of Public Health, and the other in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women.
