Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Joan was born Joan Boyle on June 20, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1960 and received the habit on June 7, 1961 when she received the religious name, Sister James Anne. (She began using the name, Sister Joan after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 20, 1962 and final vows on March 24, 1968. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1962-1969; and St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1969-1971. She taught mathematics at Pope Pius XII Regional High School, Passaic, NJ, 1971-1975 and math and business, Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester, NJ, 1975-1983. Sister was principal of Saint Lawrence School, Lindenwold, NJ, 1983-1997. She also ministered in religious development and support of children at St. Vincent’s Tacony in Philadelphia, 1995-1997. Following a sabbatical, Sister Joan was principal at Ascension of Our Lord School in Philadelphia, 1998-2000 and at St. Paul School, Jersey City, NJ, 2000-2003; and St. Christopher School, Parsippany, NJ, 2003-. Sister Joan earned her BA in Mathematics from Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY and her ME in Business Education from Trenton State in New Jersey.
