Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Theresa of Jesus was born Madeline Bouchard on September 12, 1905 in St. Hyacinth, Quebec, Canada. She entered the Fall River Congregation on January 8, 1925 and received the habit on December 7, 1925 when she received the religious name, Sister Theresa of Jesus. She pronounced first vows on December 8, 1926 and final vows on December 8, 1930. During her years in the congregation she served in the following ministries: St.... Thomas; St. Anne; as assistant and principal, St. Anne; and St. Peter. Sister taught High School in: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA. She was Mistress of Novices, Fall River, MA, 1941-1946 and then elected Prioress of the Fall River Congregation, 1952-1970. She retired from active ministry in 1992 and volunteered in the Dominican Academy Library and wherever else she was needed. Sister Theresa's favorite past time was knitting baby outfits. In May of 2002 she moved to Siena Hall at the Newburgh Center of Hope. She died November 9, 2002. See more
