Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Joanne was born Joanne Bonville on December 4, 1931 in Malone, NY. She entered the Fall River Congregation on August 29, 1949 and received the habit on August 28, 1950 when she received the religious name, Sister James Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Joanne after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 30, 1951 and final vows on August 30, 1954. During her years in the congregation she served in the following ministries: Dominican Academy ,Fall River, MA, 1949,1953-1954-1955; in the religious education program at St. Ann’s Parish in Mooers Forks, NY, 1953-1954; St. Peter’s, Plattsburgh, NY, 1955-1960; and St. Bernadette, New Haven, CT, 1960-1967. She was principal of St. Peter’s School in Plattsburgh, NY, 1967-1978. Sister served on the general council of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, 1970-1982 and was vocation director and director of on-going formation, 1982-1987. Sister Joanne was administrator of St. Catherine’s Convent in Fall River, MA, 1987-1990. She then taught and served as substitute teacher at Holy Family/Holy Name School, New Bedford, MA, 1990-? In addition to her regular ministry, Sister Joanne volunteered in the Visitors & Eucharistic Ministers Program at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, MA, 1979-1984, and also served as a lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Julie’s Church, North Dartmouth, MA for a number of years. Sister earned her BA in English/History from Regis College, Weston MA, her MA in Administration from Fairfield University, CT; and her MA in Religious Studies from Providence College, RI.
