Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Frances was born Frances Berski on November 20, 1938 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1956 and received the habit on June 12, 1957 when she was given the religious name, Sister Catherine Andre. (She began using the name, Sister Frances after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1958 and final vows on August 21, 1961. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1958-1966; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1966-1969; St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1969-1970, full time study; Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1972-1976, 1983-?; and Director of Reading Center, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1972-1976. Sister Frances earned degrees in: BA, Elementary Education, Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, MA in education, Temple University; Ed.D., Psychology of Reading, Temple University; and MSA, Business Administration for non-profit Institutions, Notre Dame University, IN. Sister also served on the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, 2003-2005. She died December 19, 2005.
