This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Johanna was born Julia Berky on June 28, 1901 in Passaic, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1925 and received the habit on May 26, 1926 when she was given the religious name, Sister Johanna. She pronounced first vows on May 6, 1927 and final vows on August 1, 1933. During her years in the congregation she served in the following places: Holy Rosary, Hawthorn, NY, 1927; Holy Rosary, New York City, 1930; Washington, DC, 1936; Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1945,-1946; St. Patrick, Newburgh, NY, 1945; Bayonne, NJ, 1948; St. Boniface, Paterson, NJ, 1949-1962; Sts. Peter and Paul, Trenton, NJ, 1962-1966, 1972-1973. Sister moved to Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY in 1973. She died May 21, 1996.
