Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Maureen was born Maureen Bergin on December 6, 1929 in Pelham Manor, NY. She entered the Ossining Congregation on September 8, 1950 and received the habit on April 31, 1951 when she received the religious name, Sister Margaret Mary. (She began using the name, Sister Maureen after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on May 1, 1952 and final vows on May 1, 1955. During her years in the congregation she served in the following... Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: Ossining, NY, 1952-1954; Misericordia Hospital, NY, 1954-1957; Bronx, NY, 1957-1959; Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY, Head Nurse, Supervisor, 1959-1961; 84th St., NY, Nursing Supervisor, 1962-1966; Columbus, OH, 1966-1968; Hampton Bays, NY, 1968-1972; Hamptons Community Service Center, later called Catholic Charities Community Center, Bridgehampton, NY, 1972-1976- 1984-1990; and SW and Addictions counselor, 1994-. Sister Maureen Michael earned: an RN from Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing, (later called Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center); a BA in Public Health Nursing from Hunter College, New York City; and an MA in pastoral counseling from Fairfield University, CT. She died February 5, 1997. See more
