Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marie Clare was born Jane Bennett on May 3, 1903 in Roseton, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on December 8, 1924 and received the habit on August 22, 1925 when she was given the religious name, Sister Marie Clare. She pronounced first vows on August 23, 1926 and final vows on August 30, 1932. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1926-1941; St. Mary Magdalene, New York City, 1941-1945; St. Peter, Rosendale, NY, 1945-1947; Sacred Heart, Raleigh, NC, 1947-1956; St. Thomas, Cornwall, NY, 1956-1961; Guardian Angel, New York City, 1961-1962; Holy Rosary, Hawthorn, NY, 1962-1969; St. Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1969-1974; and Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1974-?. Sister moved to Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY in 1981. Sister Marie Clare earned a BS in education from Villanova, University, PA. She died July 29, 1999.
