Biographical / Historical
Sister Lorraine was born Margaret Beckes on June 4, 1918 in Bitumen, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1942 and received the habit on June 17, 1943 when she received the religious name, Sister Lorraine. She pronounced first vows on June 18, 1944 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1944-1945; Saints Peter and Paul, Trenton, NJ, 1945-1959; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1959-1962; Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1962-1971; Guardian Angel, New York City, 1971-1972; and St. Joseph Grade School, Toms River, NJ, 1972-1988. She continued on at St. Joseph’s as a teachers’ assistant, 1988-. Sister Lorraine earned her BS and MA in Elementary Education with a minor in secondary education from Villanova University, PA. She died April 8, 2016.
