Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marion Michael was born Marion Beagen on September 9, 1930 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1956 and received the habit on June 12, 1957 when she received the religious name, Sister Marion Michael. She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1958 and final vows on August 21, 1961. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Anthony, Hawthorne, NJ 1958-1960; Saint Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1960-1961; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1961-1962; Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1962-1964; Saints Peter & Paul, Trenton, NJ, 1964-1970; Saint Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1970-1971; and Sacred Heart, Newburgh, NY, 1971-1972. Sister also was director of religious education while at Saint Mary and Sacred Heart in Newburgh, NY. Sister was full-time director of religious education at: Sacred Heart, Newburgh, NY, 1972-1979; Star of the Sea Parish, Long Branch, NJ, 1979-1981; and at St. Ann’s, Nyack, NY, 1981-1985. She was attendance secretary at the Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, CA, 1985-1986. She returned to the northeast and taught at Franciscan High School, Mohegan Lake, NY, 1986-1988. She then moved to Mount Saint Mary, Newburgh, NY, as college library technician. She earned Master’s degrees in Religion from LaSalle University and in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University.
