Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Barbara was born Barbara Barton on July 4, 1937 in Upper Darby, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1958 and received the habit on June 16, 1959 when she received the religious name, Sister Thomas Aquin. She began using the name, Sister Barbara after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1960 and final vows on August 4, 1966. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Elizabeth City and Durham, NC, 1963-1967. She taught piano at Mount Saint Mary Music School in Newburgh, NY, 1968-1978 and also taught at Guardian Angel Elementary School, New York City, 1978-1979. She served in music ministry at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, Bronx, NY, 1979-1984 and at Our Lady Queen of the Angels Parish in New York City, 1989-1990. Sister was also rehearsal pianist for shows and accompanied the concert choir and madrigal singers at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY for seven years. She served four years at the Webster Apartments, a residence for working women in New York City, 1990-1994. Sister Barbara was engaged in a variety of services to the Congregation, 1994 to 1997. She was music teacher at Dominican Academy in Fall River, MA, 1997-1999 and was sacristan for the Center of Hope, Fall River, MA, 1999-2001. Sister Barbara earned her BA in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY; her BM in Music from Marywood, Scranton, PA; and her MA in Music from Marywood, Scranton, PA.
