Biographical / Historical
Sister Marie was born Marie Atkinson on August 13, 1919 in New York City. She entered the Ossining Congregation on February 1, 1940 and received the habit on August 4, 1940 when she received the religious name, Sister Catherine. (She began using the name, Sister Marie after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on December 13, 1941 and final vows on December 13, 1944. During her years in the congregation she served in the following Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: Columbus, OH, 1942-1944,1949-1951, as Supervisor; 1974-1978; as Supervisor and Director of Agency; Ossining, NY, 1948-1949; Denver, CO, 1972-1974; Hampton Bays, NY, 1978-1980. Sister Marie also served the congregation as: Novice Mistress, 1954-1963; General Council, 1963-1966; Major Superior, 1966-1972; Secretary to Congregational Administration, 1981-1988; and Archivist of Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor, 1989-1995. Sister also assisted in the Archives of the Dominican Sisters of Hope after the creation of the new Congregation in 1995. She died July 27, 2001.
